Matthew has been in public practice for over 20 years, operating a full-time income tax practice since 1988.
Throughout his career, Matthew has been exposed to a diverse set of client tax situations and involved extensively in major tax projects. His practice at MacKay LLP places special emphasis on the design and planning of tax strategies with respect to immigration to and emigration from Canada, cross-border structures, foreign investments by Canadians, and business expansion to foreign jurisdictions.
His other areas of special interest include estate planning, personal financial planning, corporate reorganizations, purchases and sales of businesses, corporate mergers and acquisitions, dispute resolutions with the Canada Revenue Agency – both at the audit and appeals levels, syndication structuring and implementation, and Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax credits.
Matthew, who is fluent in Cantonese, has been working with his overseas clients, especially those from Hong Kong, to assist them in developing strategies for expanding and relocating their businesses and investments to Canada.
Professional Memberships and Education
Matthew is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia (ICABC), the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), the Canadian Tax Foundation, and a former member of the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of British Columbia. Matthew received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Hong Kong and his Licentiate in Accounting (LIC Acct) from the University of British Columbia.
Volunteer Activities
Matthew is the author of various articles on tax issues. He has also given talks for the People’s Law School on tax-related matters, commentated for the media on federal budgets, and assisted at the income tax clinic in the Chinese community.
